Flood and fire have devastated the forests around Austin, Texas, in recent years, impacting urban centers as well as wildlands. TreeFolks, a tiny nonprofit at the time, was approached by partner organizations to help create a new model of large-scale reforestation that provides free trees and planting services in one-on-one consultations with hundreds of landowners. Part reforestation and part disaster relief, the combined programs have planted 1.7 million trees in just four years, with plans to plant a million more in the next four.
